This blog will be issued every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday morning and updated if the weather is changing or critical or interesting weather events are occurring.

In an earlier blog I explained cutoff or closed low pressure areas.   These are low pressure areas that cutoff or close off from the main flow pattern (jetstream).  They are common in the spring and their movement is slow...erratic...and hard to forecast.

The last several days there has been a closed low over Nevada.  This system has caused showers and thunderstorms over the areas of Northern California along and east of the Sierra Cascade Crest.  Today that low is actually moving slowly back to the west.  Out in the Pacific you can see another closed low forming (see satellite picture below).  This low will be approaching the coast Tuesday and then over Northern California on Wednesday (see map below). As the low nears the coast the Nevada low will dissipate and its moisture will be pulled westward into the off shore low.  The low will be just east of our area Thursday and Friday.  Longer range models show another closed low off the coast late Saturday through Monday.

Today there will be scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms over the higher elevations east of the valley with isolated activity north and  west.  Temperatures today will be a little above normal.  Tuesday and Wednesday the shower and thunderstorm activity will become more widespread with a chance of thunderstorms over the valley.  Temperatures will be a little below normal.

Thursday and Friday the higher elevations east of the valley will have isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms with mostly sunny skies elsewhere.  Temperatures will be above normal.

Saturday through Monday the thunderstorms become more widespread with a chance in the valley Sunday and Monday.
