Weather Discussion for Monday July 31, 2017

Normal high and low temperatures for July 31-Aug 7 (high/low)...Redding 99/65, Chico 96/58, Quincy 90/43, Chester 86/45, Susanville 89/51, Grass Valley 89/57, Weaverville 95/49, Mt. Shasta 86/50, Yreka 92/53, Alturas 89/43

This blog will be issued every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday morning and updated if the weather is changing or critical or interesting weather events are occurring.

A very strong high pressure ridge is now over the western U.S.   Record or near record high temperatures are expected through Wednesday.   The hottest days will be Tuesday and Wednesday.   The smoky skies will keep the temperatures down in some areas.  Without the smoke and with light north winds Redding would be close to it's all time official high of 118 on Tuesday and Wednesday.   However,  with the smoke and wind flow I expect we will be 114 to 116 on those days.   Winds will be light.

Temperatures will start to slowly cool starting Thursday but will remain above normal through the weekend.  The cooling will be a result of the high slightly weakening (see map below) and sub tropical moisture be pulled northward over our area.   Thursday through the weekend we will have partly to mostly sunny skies with thunderstorms mainly over the foothills and mountains.   There is a chance of thunderstorms over the valley Thursday night and Friday.
